Ask growers what caps a harvest and most name rain, seed or pests. Our answer is plainer: carbon. Each added point of soil organic matter stores some 20,000 extra litres of water per acre and frees a store of nutrients no sack can equal. Soil care isn't a creed here — it's the farm's ledger.

Reading a soil report like a tale

Every block is sampled each autumn, yet the figures that count fit an index card: organic matter, acidity, and the calcium-magnesium balance that decides whether earth crumbles or crusts. The rest is footnotes. As organic matter rises, worms arrive first, then structure, then the toughness that rides out a dry June.

Tend the ground and it tends the crop. Dose only the crop and you'll be dosing it for good.

How we brew compost

Green waste, strawy muck and woodchip near 30:1 carbon to nitrogen, turned when the heap tops 65°C, then spread at 20 tonnes a hectare the autumn before greedy crops. It's plain, diesel-scented graft — and the best-paid hours on the farm.

Begin from your own gate

Our acreage isn't needed to start. One compost bay, one covered corner, one sample this autumn. Small soils answer quickest, and the spade never fibs: dig, sniff, count worms. For help shaping the whole system, our Organic Farm Solutions team draws conversion plans around just this.
