Project Overview

Cover Crops Doing the Heavy Lifting

Hilltop earth runs thin, hungry and fast to dry. Rather than bagged feed for the corn, we test which cover mix nourishes it best — tracking vigour, weeds and, at the end, eating quality.

  • Challenge: thin hilltop soil with low water retention and rising fertiliser costs.
  • Approach: four cover mixes in replicated strips, crimped and strip-tilled ahead of corn.
  • Outcome: vetch-rye strips now standard across all hilltop corn, with clover living mulch spreading.
