Sunset Wheat Fields

Old grains on renewed ground — 60 acres moved from hard-worked wheat into spelt, emmer and milling wheat rotations.

Project Overview

Worn Pasture, Fresh Loaves

The west blocks came to us in 2019 with organic matter under 2% and crusting after each shower. Six seasons on, the same acres yield prize heritage grain, stone-milled ten miles away.

  • Challenge: compacted, low-carbon soil with blackgrass pressure.
  • Approach: two years of herbal leys, compost at 20 t/ha, then shallow non-inversion tillage.
  • Outcome: reliable heritage grain supplying three bakeries and our own flour line.
